Last night, in Chicago, we heard the sirens go off four times. Yes, four times. It’s a loud funny type of sound. Tornados had been spotted in Chicago’s suburbs heading toward Chicago. Our IPhones were giving a “Find shelter now ALERT. Stay away from windows, etc.”
I was monitoring the news, and they showed this picture of dark clouds over the Willis Tower, formerly knows as the Sears Tower (since 1973), one of the largest skyscrapers in the world. Imagine, 110 stories high.
As I was sheltering in place, watching the sky grow darker and darker I thought about tornadoes versus earthquakes. I grew up in the Midwest, so I am used to tornadoes.
However, when I went to California, they are known for earthquakes. I found those much scarier, because there is no warning one is coming. Then, once it has come, there are the after shocks and you don’t know how many of those will come. For a week, you are basically waiting, wondering, hoping it’s not another “big one!”
Now, with tornadoes, you have warnings and they pass within 2-5 hours. Then it’s amazing to see the sun come out and see the beautiful blue skies as if nothing had happened. We all go outside to assess the damage. Fallen trees or power lines, damage to houses, cars, etc.
The weather forecasters were full of excitement last night. Meaning, this was their time to go LIVE showing off their expertise in cloud formations, tornado touch downs, etc. Nice to see them have “their day.”
What natural disasters do you live through on a regular basis?
Iceland just had the volcano erupt. That looks scary!
