BOOK REVIEW: The International House of Dereliction by Jacqueline Davies

Welcome Jacqueline Davies!

Book:Β The International House of DerelictionΒ

Author:Β Jacqueline DaviesΒ Β Β Β Genre: MG, Ghosts

A few months ago, Jacqueline Davies was kind enough to send me a signed copy of her book in the mail. I started the book, life got busy, and I put it aside. Then one day, I stopped in at the library to drop off my daughter’s overdue books.

Guess what, I saw her book on the shelf. A SIGN, go home and finish reading her book!

WHAT IS THIS STORY ABOUT? This story is about Alice Cannoli-Potchnik, a 10 year home schooled girl. She’s the daughter of Professor Cannoli, her mother, who works for a University and her father Potchink who prides himself in having fixed each house they have lived in (11 houses in all). One day, Alice becomes curious about an old house next door that needs β€œfixing.” Like her father, she’s up for the task. She sneaks into the house and as she is exploring and fixing things, she hears mysterious noises. Turns out there are ghosts who live in this House. These ghosts are sad. Events happened in their lives that did not allow them to have closure when they passed away. So, Alice starts to listen to their stories, do research with the goal of helping them make peace with the past. When a demolition crew comes, what happens to these poor ghosts? Is Alice able to save them?

This is a unique story. I enjoyed seeing a home schooled young girl being adventurous, confident to fix things, and determined to research past events to try and save the ghosts.

Thank you… if I am writing children’s books, I should do a few more. I like to write about all sorts of things. Life is about β€œeverything,” not just one category.
