Horatio Hornblower, TV Series

This past weekend, my daughters and I were reminiscing about old shows we loved. TOP of the list was the Horatio Hornblower TV series (1998-2003). This A&E mini-series was based on C.S. Forester’s books about a British naval officer (Hornblower) during the Napoleonic wars. It’s a magnificent show. Thanks to GP – Pacific Paratrooper, for all of his wonderful posts on the U.S. Navy, reminded me to revisit Horatio. Also, Pat – e-Quips, your Naval posts too.

Horatio Hornblower, while fictional, will have you wondering if he was a real man. The story is that good! The actors, each one, are AMAZING. From the moment Horatio boards the ship as a midshipmen, the story is full of adventure, heroism, gallantry, danger, respect, intimidation – you’ll be on the edge of your seat, ready for the next episode.

Here’s a YouTube clip from RR Videos ARCHIVE, a fabulous compilation of humorous moments in the Hornblower series. Hopefully, you can click to the link, for some reason, YouTube wasn’t allowing me to embed the link here.

This is one of those timeless family shows for ALL ages. My daughters were in grade school when we watched it and they loved it. Every week, “When do we watch Hornblower?”

Enjoy!

  1. Monica, thanking me in the same sentence as GP is a wonderful thanks! Glad you like both the blogs and Horatio Hornblower series. I never watched, but it was not because I would not have liked it.

It’s still around, but it might only be on BritBox now or DVD if you still have a DVD player.

Look at reviews on Amazon. Your library might have the DVDs too.

  4. My father-in-law read the books, but I would prefer TV for this. Thanks for telling me.

Look at Amazon reviews, people LOVE the show even now. I told Pat, if you still have a DVD player, you might find the show through the library. Otherwise, see where it might be streaming.
