Navy Seals – Motivational Speech…“Make Your Bed!”

Life is full of surprises. This weekend I saw this children’s book at the store. The story and the illustrations are fantastic.

I smiled, because I remember Navy Admiral William H. McRaven (RET.) from 2014, when he gave an outstanding Commencement speech to the graduating class of the University of Texas at Austin.

Since that speech, he’s come out with two books on “making your bed,” one for adults and a second one for children. His message is powerful. Basically, making your bed in the morning is your FIRST accomplishment of the day.

This message might seem simplistic, but there is more, listen to his speech below, you’ll feel moved, motivated and inspired.

If you haven’t heard his Commencement speech, here it is on YouTube:

Have a great day!

Of course, I’m wondering… Did you make your bed? I DID!

  1. I don’t need persuasion as I always make my bed! The book for the children looks beautifully illustrated, so thank you, Monica, for the image and the link.

  3. I remember this speech too – and I ALWAYS start my day with a made bed… just wish my kids were as diligent – it drives me mad seeing their linen all scrunched up – but they seem to be intentional and successful in other things that they do, so I have to pick my battles (I’m sure an admiral would agree)! Yes, with kids, I found they made it when I went in and told them, “Hurry up, let’s make the bed.” They didn’t want to, but did it. After that, it becomes a habit. Like eating breakfast or brushing teeth, why do we do those things. Like you say though, we pick our battles.

      1. Routine is a good thing; it helps me a lot to have some ritual-touchstone-activities throughout the day, but I guess the trick is we have to let them form their own routines – they’re more likely to stick to them! xx

  4. My youngest came home from University one day telling us how inspiring it was to have an Orientation Week class about making your bed. We thought it was so funny!

LOL – it is nice to come home to a bed that is made.
