Today is the day to get your Paczki! Here in Chicago, it’s BIG. Bakeries have been working over time to make them. The last day to indulge before Lent.
We have a large Polish community here. I was reading that the best place to find Paczki’s today is in the Midwest (Illinois / Michigan), that’s where Polish immigrants first settled when they came to America (1989-1900s). Of course, many bakeries across America carry them.
Paczki is a Polish doughnut, while it looks like an American jelly doughnut, it’s actually denser, richer and usually has a grain alcohol in it.
Here’s a YouTube video, “The History of Paczki Day in Michigan.”
If you live in the Chicago area, Eater Chicago, “Chicago’s Best Paczki” compiled a great list of bakeries selling Paczki’s today.
I’ve never had a Paczki, I think today is the day to try one!!
