The Sunflower…

It’s sunflower season. I‘m always amazed at how tall they grow, but I don’t know much about them, so I did some investigating.

A sunflower can hold approximately 1,000 seeds. The seeds are found under the tiny blossoms. The bigger seeds are on the outside of the flower, which makes sense. I don’t have time to go to a sunflower farm this year, so finding a video was the next best thing.

4 Kids and a Farm had a good YouTube video, Harvesting Sunflower Seeds. The owner takes us through the process of cutting down the sunflowers, pulling out the blossoms / seeds and then roasting them. A fun family affair.

There is so much beauty in nature.

I definitely have a better appreciation for eating sunflower seeds now. Also, I want to try sunflower oil too.

Do you use sunflower oil? If yes, how do you use it?

  1. We used to have gerbils who loved sunflower seeds. They would pick them first to eat and when given only sunflowers, they would consume them like kids in a candy store. It is also the national flower of Ukraine. If you rotate crops in a field, growing sunflowers can enrich the soil.

Wonderful, thank you for sharing this new information. The farmer was saying he even keeps the stocks of the sunflowers, uses them to start fires in the winter. At some point, I’ll have to go to a sunflower festival.
