Thailand / Japan – Rice paddy art!

I recently read this Reuters article, “Thai rice farmer makes art with plantings that depict cats.

Incredible, mixing art with technology in rice paddy fields. If you click on the Reuters link, you’ll see a video that describes how this art was accomplished.

Farmer Tanyapong Jaikham explains how he uses GPS coordinates to plant seedlings designated in his artist’s sketch. The key is knowing the tint the plants will have as they grow. This creates the magnificent piece of art in the rice paddy field.

Rice paddy art started in Inakadate Village in Aomori Prefecture, Japan. They’ve had Festivals since 1993. They started doing this art to make money for their village through Tourism. It takes about three months from design to planting to complete a piece of art.

Here’s a YouTube video from Great Big Story, “These Murals Were Grown from Rice.”

As you watch the video, it’s beautiful to see a close up of the plants in so many colors swaying in the wind.

A new reason to travel to Asia!
