Have you heard the latest news out of Monterey, California? They’ve closed San Carlos beach due to sea lions migrating there. Apparently, Monterey has a good food source for them.

I found it interesting that they are mainly male, no females. Well, unless a female got in the group somehow, but that is rare.

Here’s a news clip, KION 46 News Channel, where you can see and hear how loud they are. They will stay for 3-4 weeks.

Looks like their end of summer vacation!

    I always think of sea lions in the San Diego coves near La Jolla (and at Sea World) rather than up north. This is encouraging, if only because it appears to be a healthy gathering spot for them.

      La Jolla has both California Sea Lions and harbor seals. Normally they live in different beaches. Harbor Seals have taken over the former Children’s Pool and have their pups there, usually in the late winter or early Spring. I loved in San Diego also.

        Thanks, Monica. It comes from being interested in Pinnipeds and living in San Diego, Monterey and Seattle, all of which have seals or sea lion colonies

    I used to live in Monterey. The story was that female sea lions lived on the Channel Islands. In the summer the males would migrate for several weeks to mate. They came back in the early fall with smiles on their whiskery faces. I noticed that every summer they would disappear

      Interesting, I lived in the Bay Area for many years and would visit Monterey / Carmel, but it must not have been in August, because I don’t remember hearing about so many sea lions gathering. In La Jolla, they’ve been charging beach goers. Not an easy situation, especially since it is summer. Humans don’t want beaches closed.

        No, people don’t want to lose a beach. Children’s Beach was a gift to La Jolla from an heiress and when the harbor seals arrived, there was a lot of debate on whether humans or seals should have the beach. Once the harbor seals started pupping there, the Marine Mammal Protection Act in kicked in, if I remember correctly. It’s been a few years now…

        La Jolla Cove is about a half mile from Children’s Pool. The cove has sea lions while the Children’s Pool has Harbor Seals.

        You seldom find both species in the same beach.

    You can find a variety of deals and sea lions along the entire Pacific Coast from South America to Alaska.

    I think that the larger more mobile California Sea Lions are more likely to charge people than the smaller harbor seals who mostly wiggle across the sand. They can’t reverse their flippers like sea lions can.
